Description

On 28 September, marking six years since the death of Jorge Salavisa, the São Luiz Theatre pays tribute to this leading figure in contemporary artistic creation. This commemoration stems from a deep sense of appreciation and a heartfelt desire on the part of the São Luiz team to honour the man who was its first director and who was largely responsible for the theatre’s current operating model and identity.

Jorge Salavisa (1939–2020) was one of the most influential figures in dance in Portugal. An exceptional dancer, teacher and artistic director, he dedicated his life to promoting dance and training generations of artists. At the helm of the Gulbenkian Ballet, the National Ballet Company and the São Luiz Theatre, he left a profound mark on Portuguese culture, distinguishing himself through his vision, sensitivity and unwavering commitment to artistic excellence. His legacy lives on on the stage, in the artists he inspired and in the memories of all those who learnt to dance through life with him.

The event will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, which will serve as a permanent reminder of his time at the São Luiz Theatre, followed by speeches by the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, the artistic director of the São Luiz, Miguel Loureiro, as well as family. A reception will be held.

The tribute will culminate in a screening of the film Jorge Salavisa – Keep Going, directed by Marco Martins, based on an idea by Luísa Taveira and Miguel Honrado, and produced by Maria & Mayer – a poignant tribute to the memory we wish to preserve.
